Tucked along a quiet backstreet in Hongdae, Millo Coffee Roasters isn’t the kind of place you plan for. It’s the kind you stumble upon – understated, unassuming, and easy to miss if you’re not paying attention.
But in a country with over 100,000 coffee shops, where competition is relentless and standards are exceptionally high, Millo stands quietly distinguished. It has received the Blue Ribbon every year since 2016, a mark of consistent excellence in South Korea’s most respected restaurant and café guide. When travelling around Korea, spotting a Blue Ribbon is often a reassuring sign that you’re about to enjoy something the locals genuinely appreciate.

The café itself is refreshingly simple. No elaborate décor, no gimmicks, no attempt to impress through aesthetics. Everything suggests that the focus here is on one thing – making good coffee.
A cappuccino felt like the right order. It’s one of the purest tests of a barista’s skill, leaving nowhere to hide. The espresso has to be properly extracted, the milk perfectly textured, and the balance between the two carefully judged.
What arrived, even in a paper cup because we had visited just before closing time, was remarkable.
The temperature was spot on, and the coffee-to-milk ratio felt beautifully balanced. But it was the milk foam that immediately caught our attention. The microfoam was incredibly fine, made up of tiny, tightly packed bubbles that created a velvety texture unlike any we’ve experienced in recent years. It felt rich yet light, dense yet delicate. The foam held together just long enough before melting seamlessly into the espresso, releasing the natural sweetness of the milk and blending effortlessly with the coffee’s pleasant bitterness. Each sip became a smooth, full-bodied mouthful that coated the palate without ever feeling heavy.
It was, quite simply, a cappuccino of remarkable precision.
Having visited several cafés ranked among the World’s 100 Best Coffee Shops, we can comfortably say Millo belongs in that conversation. It may not yet enjoy the same level of international recognition, but purely in terms of the quality of the beverage, this cappuccino stood shoulder to shoulder with some of the very best we’ve tasted.
There’s something reassuring about places like Millo Coffee Roasters. No loud music. No queues built on social media hype. Just a quiet coffee house where the barista is devoted to the craft, proving that sometimes, all you need is a damn good cup of coffee.
