Busan’s Fiery Octopus That Had Us Sweating for More

Bulkkeun Octopus

Bulggeun Nakzi-bokkeum (Spicy Stir-Fried Octopus)

There are meals you remember for their flavour, and then there are meals you remember because they made you sweat through your shirt.

Moments after polishing off the famous Busan Nakji Croquette at Busandang, we wandered around the neighbourhood looking for our next stop. Turning a corner, we spotted Bulkkeun Octopus. A sign promising a “Smoky Fire Flavour” was all the convincing we needed. In a city synonymous with fresh seafood, walking past an octopus specialist simply wasn’t an option.

The stir-fried octopus arrived glowing a deep, fiery red that looked every bit as intimidating as it should. Before we even picked up our chopsticks, the smoky aroma drifted across the table, building anticipation for what was about to unfold.

The sauce was thick and unapologetically coated every piece of octopus. It delivered layers of sweetness, smokiness and deep savoury richness before the heat exploded across our mouths. This wasn’t a gentle warmth that crept up slowly. It announced itself immediately and refused to leave. Within minutes, beads of sweat appeared across our foreheads, yet somehow every bite made us want another.

Thankfully, the octopus itself was excellent. Each piece was chunky, firm and pleasantly chewy without crossing into rubbery territory. It retained just enough bite to remind you that you were eating fresh octopus, not fighting your way through seafood leather.

The supporting cast deserved just as much praise. Silky tofu topped with sweet gochujang offered a welcome moment of relief, its creamy texture soothing the tongue before the next fiery assault. Even more refreshing was the icy miyeok-oi-naengguk, a chilled seaweed and cucumber soup that balanced tanginess, gentle sweetness and crisp vegetables. Together with the rice and banchan, they created the perfect rhythm – one spicy bite, one cooling bite, then back into the fire.

Humble Belly has a fairly high tolerance for spicy food, but Bulkkeun Octopus pushed us further than any other meal we experienced throughout Korea. It was painfully hot, wonderfully smoky and strangely addictive. The kind of meal that leaves you drenched in sweat, smiling from ear to ear, and already thinking about your next bite.
